Okay so, before we dive into the history of cinnamon, I have to tell you why this spice is so near and dear to my heart… hence the name, CINNAMON Goddess Lai. *wink* Personally, I work with the Goddess Abundantia. Cinnamon is literally Abundantia in spice form! And since so much of my mystical practices—rituals, spellcraft, and manifestation workings—revolve around abundance, prosperity, and success, cinnamon has become one of the absolute go-to spices in my apothecary. But my uses for it are not just magical… cinnamon has also helped me lose weight by naturally boosting my metabolism and curbing my appetite.

Now that you know why cinnamon is one of my personal favorites, let’s uncover the secrets it’s held for centuries.  Its history is just as enchanting as its power… Originating mainly from Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, and Southwest Asia. Cinnamon comes from the inner bark in the Cinnamomum Genus trees, primarily the Cinnamomum Verum (also known as true cinnamon) and the Cinnamomum Cassia species. Cinnamon is one of the oldest known spices in international trade and was once considered more valuable than gold.

From the very beginning, cinnamon was rare and highly prized, making it perfect for trade across ancient civilizations. In approximately 2000 BC Cinnamon first appeared in Egypt, used for rituals, embalming, perfumes, and offerings. Cinnamon was thought by the Egyptians to have come from mystical lands. The secrecy of it’s origins made it extremely valuable. Arab traders maintained these secrets to keep high prices and control the flow of cinnamon into Europe. These traders sometimes spread myths like telling others that cinnamon grew on islands guarded by dragons.

Cinnamon eventually made its way to Greece and Rome, where it was treasured as a luxury item. Roman elites used it in perfumes, incense, and food, and it was considered a symbol of wealth and status.Through the Middle Ages, cinnamon remained a highly coveted spice in Europe. Traders from Venice, Genoa, and later Portugal and the Netherlands fiercely competed for control over its supply. Cinnamon fueled the Age of Exploration, driving European powers to seek direct access to its sources in Sri Lanka. So, cinnamon wasn’t just valuable for its flavor—it was considered sacred, used medicinally, in rituals, and even as currency in some trade networks. Its rich aroma, healing properties, and association with prosperity made it one of the most beloved spices in history.

As treasured as cinnamon has been in trade and luxury, its most timeless magic lies in the spiritual realm. For thousands of years, this sacred spice has carried prayers, blessings, and offerings, acting as a bridge between humans and the divine — infusing rituals with power, abundance, and connection to forces greater than ourselves. I mentioned earlier some spiritual uses of cinnamon by the Egyptians but spiritual uses for cinnamon have been practiced throughout various cultures and religions. It’s used in Chinese medicine, islamic cultures, greek mythology and it’s even mentioned several times in the bible.

Having seen how cinnamon has been cherished in spiritual practices across the world, it’s clear this little spice holds serious power. So, you might be wondering… how can we channel and harness that energy for ourselves? The answer lies in its correspondences — cinnamon’s connections to abundance, love, protection, and personal empowerment. By understanding these associations, you can use cinnamon intentionally in your rituals, spells, and daily practices to amplify your intentions, attract prosperity, spark passion, or shield your energy. Essentially, cinnamon is like a little spark of divine energy you can sprinkle into your life, turning your desires into reality faster.
